"Say it Louder" series
Following the death of George Floyd more and more artists have begun to amplify the Black Lives Matter movement with their work. I was inspired by the way the Minneapolis artist community came together and transformed the plywood boards that protected the city from destruction during the protests into something beautiful. Artists took it upon themselves to help us see how numb our world has become to injustice, hate, oppression, and systemic racism. Art became a way to heal the city. I wanted to voice my own support, and I knew art was something I could do to contribute. I wanted these portraits to focus on color, and not just about the vibrancy, but also the way we see color in people, the way we can learn from it, and the way we value it. I hope that my pieces can celebrate the beauty of the lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery and show how their legacy is changing the world. I hope that the colors I chose can speak just as loud as we say their names. Finally, I hope that by purchasing a T-shirt, the buyer can wear a piece that can create those crucial conversations that we need as a community to grow and change in this movement in history.
